A woman who told police she was hearing the devil's voice was found guilty Wednesday of fatally stabbing her two youngdaughters.
The jury also determined Jennifer Kukla was mentally ill.
法官也認為Jennifer Kukla 有精神疾病。
"She will get treatment behind bars, but she is going toprison," Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said.
"在鐵窗內她將得到治療,但是她必須坐牢" 馬克姆州檢察官Eric Smith說.
Police discovered the bodies of Alexandra, 8, and Ashley, 5, attheir home in February, along with those of three dogs and a petmouse. Police were called to the home about 25 miles north of Detroit by one of Kukla's sisters.
Officers testified that Kukla reported hearing the voice of thedevil telling her to kill her daughters and the
Three psychiatrists called by Freers testified that Kukla, 30,was legally insane when the girls were killed. But assistantprosecutor William Cataldo countered that she had managed to ignorevoices telling Kukla to take her own life.
"I believe the jury just couldn't get past the fact there were two dead children," Freerssaid.
Kukla's sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 24. If she had beenfound not guilty by reason of insanity, she likely would have gone to a psychiatric hospital until deemed fit toresume life outside custody, Smith said.
"Since the time of these murders, she hasn't heard anothervoice," he said. "In very short order she would have been released, and we weren't prepared to accept that."
(This version CORRECTS that Kukla would've gone to a psychiatric hospital if she had been found not guilty by reason of insanity, instead of guilty by reason of insanity.)
Mom On Trial For Murder After Slashing Throats Of Daughters
Michigan resident, Jennifer Kukla, is on trial for the February murder of her two daughters, ages 8 and 5. She claimed evil voices were speaking to her and she killed the girls to "protect them."
Lauren Russell, the sister of the accused, was in court today speaking about the mental state of her sister before the girls were murdered.
Russell said she went to visit Kukla on the day of the murders. Kukla came to the door wearing at least a couple of layers of clothing and then told Russell "I'm going to hell." When Russell asked why she would say such a thing, Kukla told her "because I had to kill them."
